HOMETOWN COLORING BOOKS was started by a Santa Monica businesswoman named Susan Beauchene. She combined her interests in children, real estate, and coloring to create a unique and exciting souvenir coloring book.

When asked why she started the business Susan says: “I’ve lived in Santa Monica for 35 years. My daughters grew up here and I’ve always appreciated the special charm of raising children in Santa Monica.”

“One day I was enjoying coloring with a little girl who is a close family friend. As we colored in another princess I glanced up and saw several kids from my block skateboard by the front window. They all looked like they were having such a good time and the sky and trees behind them were so beautiful. I thought. “Wouldn’t it be fun to make a coloring book that was all about growing up in Santa Monica and give it to them” That’s how Hometown Coloring Books was born.

The initial idea was to capture some of the feeling of being a child in our town and reproduce it in a coloring book. As I was working on the book I soon realized it would be a great souvenir for anyone visiting Santa Monica. Tourists and residents alike would appreciate it as a gift or souvenir.

The idea just grew from celebrating Santa Monica to being able to showcase any town or city. I quickly envisioned the Santa Monica coloring book as being accompanied by books about Venice and Malibu so that local children could collect them all, and color in their environment the way it seems to them.

I’m excited about the prospect of designing a coloring book for each unique community. After all, everyone thinks that their hometown is the best, and they are all special in their own way. Which is why I now have plans to do one for my hometown, Greenwich Ct.!

As a Santa Monica mom I’m happy to be providing families with something that will help them share their special memories of their time here. Whether they are here for a week, or have lived here for years, they have all been to the Pier, and the carousel. They have seen the dinosaurs on the promenade. The beaches and mountains are distinctive, and all the kids love the murals and the other local scenes we have incorporated. It’s fun to see them turn the pages for the first time and hear them call off the places they have been to and recognize the local scenes.
